Overshadowed by big names, the work of less popular composers sometimes hides real pearls. These include the Austrian composer Ludwig Thuille's Sextet Op. 6 for piano and wind quintet. If we take the classical quintets of Mozart or Beethoven as a model, Thuille in his 1888 work develops the expression of wind instruments in a later Romantic style, without forgetting the diversity of their sound colors. Almost 40 years earlier, Sextet in C minor by Louise Farrenc, pioneer composer, outstanding pianist and professor at the Paris Conservatory, who won (in the middle of the 19th century!) salary equal to the salaries of colleagues, is music rooted much deeper in classical patterns. And how much lightness and charm in it! No less than in Francis Poulenc's neoclassical, gripping Sextet of the 1930s. You have to know this great music!
