Bohemian musical element at its best chamber. Antonín Dvořák wrote the string sextet in A major in two weeks, in May 1878, between the piano version of the Slavic Dances and the work on the Slavic Rhapsodies. This clearly shows what occupied him at the time. In the second part we find the charming Dumka — a reference to Ukrainian music, and in the final the exuberant Czech Furiant. The choice of folk rhythms turned out to be the right decision — Sextet quickly went around the world, provoking the question: who is this composer from beautiful Prague?
Bohuslav Martinů inherited the title of national composer from Dvořák — and carried it with such pride that after Hitler occupied Czechoslovakia he had to flee to America from the Nazis. The string sextet was created earlier, in 1932, and is a mature work with a Brahmic depth of reflection — despite a lighter, neoclassical aesthetic.
