In March 2027, we will celebrate the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's death. On this occasion, numerous works of the composer return in the program of the season, and there is also no shortage of music inspired by his work. This is not the first time Joanna Wnuk-Nazarova refers to Beethoven. In her two string quintets, she built structures related to his Seventh and Fourth symphonies: from the general form to the gestures of the narrative. The new Quintet decided to build on the construction of the Second.
Gordon Jacob's sextet for wind instruments and piano was created in 1956 and was dedicated to the memory of the outstanding horn player Aubrey Brain. Jacob encoded his name in the sounds. Shortly after the release of the song, Dennis Brain, son of Aubrey, also an accomplished horn player, was killed in a car accident. Today, the work commemorates both artists — father and son.
