pl. Wojciecha Kilara 1, Katowice

Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio in D major Op. 70 No. 1 got its nickname because of Carl Czerny, to whom the second part of the work was associated with the scene of the appearance of the spirit of Hamlet's father in Shakespeare's drama. The atmosphere of this passage seems to foreshadow a romantic predilection for the uncanny. We know that while working on the trio, Beethoven considered writing an opera based on another work by Shakespeare, Macbeth. The disturbing Largo is framed within the framework of two more dynamic links of the cycle, the stronger its peculiar depth resonates.

Eighty-year-old Gabriel Fauré's trio in D minor, Op. 120, is considered one of his greatest achievements in the field of chamber music. Compared to the earlier compositions, full of romantic tensions, the Trio in D minor remains as if reduced. Melancholy is accompanied here by serenitas — the weather of the spirit, the serenity of the late age. So much can be said in a half-voice...
