pl. Wojciecha Kilara 1, Katowice

The title Scherzo capriccioso suggests a musical joke, but in Dvořák's (1883) the play of appearances quickly gives way to a more ambiguous narrative: shadows, glimpses of the grotesque, anxiety and tension pulsating beneath the surface of the dance appear alongside the cylindrical freedom. The composer juggles the colors of the orchestra and builds a form with a much greater momentum than in a typical symphonic scherzo. It is from this late Romantic tradition that Horatio Parker draws from in his Organ Concerto in E minor (1902). The American, known today primarily as the teacher of Charles Ives, proposes a music of wide breathing, in which the organ enters into dialogue with the orchestra and conducts the narrative together. One can hear the fascination with the monumental sound of the instrument, the attention to the clarity of the texture and the variety of moods: from the dark beginning, through the lyrical episodes, to the energetic, virtuosic finale. Szymanowski's Nocturne and tarantela, on the other hand, are a diptych of extreme states: nocturnal contemplation and dance trembling. Part one

About the event

The first part is woven in long, sensual phrases, with an aura of exoticism characteristic of the composer and flickering harmonies. The second triggers a completely different element: a relentless pulse, accumulating virtuosity and an increasingly dense rhythm. Grzegorz Fitelberg's orchestration (1937) brings out an additional dimension from this music: it illuminates the nocturnal with subtle colour schemes, while taranteles add sharpness and brilliance.
