Funky rhythms and hypnotic chant from one of West Africa's greatest voices

About the event

With flowing grooves, hypnotic messes and psychedelic experiments, Noura Mint Seymali interprets Mauritania's rich music traditions. The Womex Artist Award-winning artist has previously delivered unforgettable concerts at both ALICE and Roskilde Festival, and after years on big stages, we are thrilled to be able to invite her back into an intimate setting in our concert hall — current with the new album “Yenbett” on Glitterbeat Records.

Mauritania, on West Africa's Atlantic coast, holds a deep and diverse musical heritage, and Noura Mint Seymali is among the country's most distinctive voices. She is born into a family of griots who, through generations, have passed on stories, poetry and music. As early as 13, she toured her home country with her powerful vocals and her impressive talent on the ardine -- the nine-stringed harp traditionally played only by women. She learned to master the instrument from her grandmother, and since then she has carried on the Mauritanian musical heritage with both respect and renewal.

Together with her husband, Jeiche Ould Chighaly, Noura Mint Seymali has created a band that bridges the gap between tradition and the present. Chighaly is a master on the string instrument tidinit, whose distinctive phrasing he transposes into electric psych-guitar. With a rock-solid rhythm section and a close interplay between guitar and vocals, the band transforms Mauritanian traditions into an immersive blend of Saharan funk, psychedelic rock and West African grooves. Through numerous acclaimed releases and extensive tours, Noura Mint Seymali has established herself as one of the most visionary artists from the region, for which she was also honored with a Womex Artist Award in 2025. She has previously wowed audiences at both ALICE and Roskilde Festival, where in 2016 she helped open Orange Scene together with The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. Now she returns to our concert hall with the new album “Yenbett” (Glitterbeat Records, 2025) and her formidable live band.
