The work of Felix Nowowiejski occupies a special place in the history of Polish music of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries as a fusion of the late Romantic musical language with the strongly rooted idea of national community. A special expression of this trend are Sea Songs Op. 42 — a choral cycle created on the wave of national excitement related to Poland regaining access to the sea and the beginning of the construction of Gdynia. Formally simple, the songs depict the Baltic as a symbol of freedom and state identity. The series is part of the tradition of the Polish patriotic song, whose importance went beyond the artistic function and ranks as an important element of the social and musical life of the 20th and 21st centuries.
