Once upon a time, in the middle of winter in Berlin, there was a story that escaped the screen.
In Babylon, a movie theater from the 1920s, a movie begins: a Christmas night, a girl named Marie, a nutcracker with a secret. But then it hits midnight in the movie — and the dancers step off the screen — live — right past your seat. Pointed shoes, the Battle with the Mouse King, a Grand Pas de Deux — ballet that is at home on major opera stages, suddenly so close that you can feel the air moving. The whole room is transformed into Marie's dream — and you're sitting right in the middle of it.
Hoffmann's story is told in its entirety: a nut too hard to crack, and the answer to how the nutcracker became a nutcracker in the first place.
Tchaikovsky's music carries the evening. And you live all night in 1920s Berlin — the film, the costumes, even the hall where you're sitting — has long been part of the stage set itself.
World premiere — December 18, 2026 in Babylon, Berlin.

Is that a movie or a ballet?
Both — in one presentation. It starts as a movie on the big screen — then the ballet takes over: live, on a stage right below, and sometimes closer than you'd expect. A continuous story, without a break.
What kind of ballet is that?
An original production by the Berlin Ballet Company, choreographed by Alexander Abdukarimov and Arshak Ghalumyan: Ballet of today — classical technique, danced on top. Costumes, stage design, the whole look — the 1920s, the decade in which Babylon was built.
What kind of movie is that?
Shot specifically for this production. It begins as an animated prologue — Hoffmann's fairy tale of the hard nut, told from the very beginning — and then becomes a live-action film in the style of the silent movie era. And when the ballet starts, the film continues: The story moves from the screen to the stage and back, right down to the last picture.
Can I bring the kids?
Yes, at any age — it's up to you. There is nothing in it that a child should not see, and the story is easy to follow: The animated prologue and film tell them so clearly that children don't need whispered explanations. Good to know: 80 minutes without a break.
And the music?
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker, from start to finish — on screen as well as on stage.
