Presented in Paris by Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes alongside popular favourites, the revolutionary work provoked uproar among audience members, with some condemning the performance and others hailing it as a work of genius. The evening would later be celebrated as a defining moment in the birth of modernism.
