Anyone familiar with Archangel Corelli's violin sonatas should also know those by Georg Muffat. Muffat was a true baroque cosmopolitan. He knew exactly where to go in order to learn the best compositional traditions. He explored the secrets of craftsmanship in Paris, also went to Prague, Vienna and Salzburg, and gained further honors in Italy. It was there that he met Corelli and from there he became his admirer. From each trip Muffat brought different musical experiences, which he incorporated into his works, skillfully combining various musical styles, competing with each other in Europe at the time.
His five sonatas included in the collection Armonico Tributo, which was published in print in 1682 in Salzburg, are works intended for two violins, two violas and basso continuo. As in Corelli's sonatas, here too there are alternating slow and fast parts, and many of them are based on dance patterns. Muffat also does not shy away from counterpoint displays — the third part of the Sonata in G major is a fugue. The same Sonata is crowned by the Passacaglia, which will be an excellent closing of the entire concert.
