pl. Wojciecha Kilara 1, Katowice

On a January evening, in the middle of winter, nothing does as good as a little sunshine straight from Venice. La Serenissima in the Baroque era was the point of greatest condensation of vocal and instrumental virtuosity. Both coloratura arias from operas of that time and concerts for one or more instruments have an energy capable of awakening from the deepest apathy.

In the aria Con fiamme, e con straggi... from Lotti's opera Giove in Argo, the heroine burns with anger. Anger and despair overflow the eponymous Athenaida, who in Vivaldi's dramatic recitative of Qual demone is portrayed by Vivaldi as a woman on the verge of madness. On the other hand, in Mio cor, s'io ti credessi, Vivaldi perfectly illustrated the jealous female heart not only with soprano coloratures, but also with string accompaniment limited only to high registers.

Similar emotional contrasts can be found in the instrumental concerts surrounding the arias included in the program. In places daring, at other times cantilene, they are a testament to how violin technique developed at that time. To be convinced of this, it is worth taking a musical trip to Venice with a guide like Martyna Pastuszka.
