About the event

“Homeland” is the latest, long-awaited film by Oscar® winner Paweł Pawlikowski, creator of “Ida” and “Cold War”, winner of the directing award at this year's 79th Cannes International Film Festival. In his latest work, as in the previous two films, the director tackles themes of identity, guilt, family and love against the backdrop of the chaos and moral confusion of post-war Europe.

Paweł Pawlikowski is one of the most successful Polish directors, winner of the Oscar® for “Ida”. His previous film, “Cold War”, also awarded at Cannes for directing, in addition to its spectacular international success (52 awards and 126 nominations, including an Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film, for Best Director and Best Cinematography) won the hearts of Polish audiences, attracting more than 1 million viewers to cinemas.

“Motherland” weaves many plots in itself, but tells about them in moderation and simplicity, in strong frames and dense scenes, leaving the viewer space to experience and imagine.

Paweł Pawlikowski, director of “Homeland”

Homeland tells the story of the relationship between Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), a Nobel Prize winner in literature, and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), an actress and writer. The action takes place at the height of the Cold War. A father and daughter embark on a difficult, emotional journey in a black Buick through ruined Germany — from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-influenced Weimar. For the first time since the end of the war, Mann returns to his homeland, having previously made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States.
