About the event

“Homeland” is the latest, long-awaited film by Oscar® winner Paweł Pawlikowski, creator of “Ida” and “Cold War”, winner of the directing award at this year's 79th Cannes International Film Festival.

Pawlikowski's previous film, “The Cold War”, also awarded for directing at Cannes, in addition to its spectacular international success (52 awards and 126 nominations, including an Oscar® for Best Foreign Language Film, for Best Director and Best Cinematography) won the hearts of Polish audiences, attracting more than 1 million viewers to the cinemas.

In his latest work, as in “Goes” and “The Cold War”, the director tackles themes of identity, guilt, family and love against the backdrop of the chaos and moral confusion of post-war Europe.

“Homeland” weaves many threads in itself, but tells about them in moderation and simplicity, in strong frames and dense scenes, leaving the viewer space to experience and imagine.” Paweł Pawlikowski

Starring Oscar® nominee Sandra Hüller (“Zone of Interest”, “Anatomy of the Fall”, “The Hail Mary Project”) and Hanns Zischler (“Munich”). The script was written by Paweł Pawlikowski and Henk Handloegten. The director once again invited his long-time creative team — Oscar-nominated cinematographer Łukasz Żal (“Hamnet”), costume designer Aleksandra Staszko (“Ministranci”) and scenographers Katarzyna Sobańska and Marcel Sławiński (“Doll”) to make the film.

Homeland tells the story of the relationship between Thomas Mann (Hanns Zischler), a Nobel Prize winner in literature, and his daughter Erika (Sandra Hüller), an actress and writer. The action takes place at the height of the Cold War. A father and daughter embark on a difficult, emotional journey in a black Buick through ruined Germany — from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-influenced Weimar. For the first time since the end of the war, Mann returns to his homeland, having previously made the difficult decision to emigrate to the United States.

Produced by Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli (OUR Films), Ewa Puszczyńska (Extreme Emotions), Jeanne Tremsal and Edward Berger (Nine Hours), Dimitri Rassam (Chapter 2) and Lorenzo Gangarossa (Circle One). On the Polish side, the film was co-produced with Canal+ Polska, the Feature Film Studio in Wrocław, the Lower Silesian Film Centre and the Silesia-Film Institute. The film was co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The production was also co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
