The glyptotek contains many sculptures of the human body — but what about the animals?
The tour is free when the entrance to the museum is paid. Tour tickets cannot be pre-booked but will be picked up in the ticket sales on the day. Tickets are not issued for groups of more than five. Larger groups are referred to book a private tour.
The museum houses a collection of 34 animal sculptures by the French artist Antoine-Louis Barye (1795-1875), and in the exhibition The Intake of Animals they are displayed in a new presentation. With Barye and the so-called animaliers, animals made their appearance as an independent motif in 19th century art — no longer portrayed as symbols or background of man, but as individuals with their own character and expression.
On the tour we take a closer look at the animal facination of the 19th century, and draw clues to the new scientific theories of the period, the zoo in Paris, the nascent industrial agriculture and the imperial expansion of France.
