The play addresses the topic of intergenerational transmission of violence. He shows it not as a series of individual acts, but as a process fixed in the norms, roles and ways of responding that for years have regulated the life of the house and determined the range of acceptable behaviors.
Bernard — the mother — enforces discipline because she alone gives her a sense of control. Her power puts relationships in order, but above all protects her from confrontation with her own feelings and responsibility for her own actions.
Adela — the youngest daughter — tries to break out of this order, paying the highest price for it.
Pontia — the servant — remains in between: she observes, comments, sometimes eases tensions, but her presence equally effectively stabilizes the system and enables it to continue.
Their roles support each other and are a sign of loyalty to the known order. The show shows violence as the result of entrenched norms and emotions that were not given room for overwork. It does not justify violence or ask who is to blame, but what makes it so difficult to stop hurting and why getting out of this system proves so difficult.
