Don Carlo tells the story of the Spanish prince Don Carlo, who loves Elisabeth of Valois. For political reasons, however, she becomes married to his father, King Philip II of Spain. Don Carlo thus finds himself caught between his forbidden love, the political intrigues of the court, and the power of the Catholic Church. His faithful friend, Rodrigo de Posa, tries to help him and at the same time works for freedom for the oppressed Flanders. Above them all rests the fearsome Grand Inquisitor, who represents the inexorable authority of the Church and is willing to sacrifice both people and justice to maintain his power.
