Verdi's Don Carlos is a work by an Italian composer in French, in which the climate of war in Spain and the melancholy of man also direct our attention to the fate of Flanders. Politics, religion, history and psychoanalysis are intertwined here, which increasingly creates discord between the main characters. And over it all, the Spanish Inquisition rests like the spider in the middle of the spin, while the rest, royal or not, splurge.
It features the very biggest stars like Jonas Kaufmann (Don Carlo), Anja Harteros (Elisabeth), Thomas Hampson (Rodrigo), Ekaterina Semenchuk (Eboli), Matti Salminen (Filip II) and Eric Halfvarson (Storinquisitor).
The performance at the Salzburg Festival in 2013 was in a magnificent new production directed by Peter Stein and conducted by Antonio Pappano. The performance is known for its great dynamic range: from intimate duets to monumental ensemble scenes, where Verdi's later style stands out clearly in its psychological depth.
