In George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, Tchaikovsky's beloved melodies are transformed into a wonderfully magical world, where budding love is pitted against mischievous mice besieging a battalion of toy soldiers, and an onstage blizzard takes the action forward to an enchanted candy land. Balanchine's astonishing choreography radiates in stunningly beautiful scenery, overwhelming costumes and exceptional visual effects, including the one-ton heavy Christmas tree that grows to an astonishing 12 feet in height. The show's grand finale involves a million watts of light sending the audience out with Christmas lights in their eyes.
