“The Christmas Story” by Charles Dickens is a classic, timeless literature, whose special power we feel during the Christmas season, but whose pronunciation should undoubtedly embody every day of the year.
The story of Ebenezer Scrooge is an example of a typical fairy tale of the road, in which the main character undergoes a profound transformation through encounters with subsequent characters and through knowing himself. The magic of this event takes place on the night of Christmas Eve.
Ebenezer Scrooge — a ruthless, cunning entrepreneur, in his callousness does not reckon with the other man. The only priority to which he is faithful is the multiplication of wealth. On Christmas Eve, he is haunted by the ghost of his late accomplice Jacob Marley. It turns out that he cannot experience eternal peace, because he led a life full of indifference and stinginess. His appearance is a warning of the serious consequences that await Scrooge if he does not change his conduct. And so begins Ebenezer's journey, and it is the most difficult journey, because deep within himself.
Subsequent ghosts reveal disturbing visions of his past, present and future, prompting him to a reckoning of conscience. He encounters poverty and misery, sees and experiences how he is perceived by others. Visits of the spirits prompt him to reflect — this is how Scrooge takes advantage of the opportunity he has received and finally turns back from the path he took in his youth.
The play juggles various conventions and theatrical symbols and takes place in several plans, using puppets, masks and all the secrets of the theater in a lively form, in addition in a truly Burton style, with features of the grotesque and macabre. His great asset is also Marcin Nagnajewicz's catchy songs with lyrics by Robert Jarosz.
The show touches on the most important issues and asks the question of what it means to be a good and honest person today.
