Daniel Chodowiecki was not only a respected illustrator, but also an active participant in the scientific life of his era. He maintained close contact with, among others, the creator of physiognomy Johann Kaspar Lavater. Chodowiecki's works accompanied texts on new geographical, medical and astronomical discoveries, and also showed the modern Prussian state under the enlightened rule of Frederick the Great. His intellectual sensibility allowed him to clothe complex scientific theories in a readable, emotionally-moving image. Both in the work and in the life of Daniel Chodowiecki we can find the era of the Enlightenment and its belief in a better tomorrow.
