We invite you to a unique tour, which is the last opportunity to visit the historic Dom pod Krzyżem in its current form.
The building, whose history dates back to the Middle Ages, housed a hospital run by priests for poor scholars. Over the centuries, the building has undergone numerous reconstructions and changes in function. In the 19th century it was adapted for apartments and service premises. In the years 1917-1937 Dom pod Krzyżem housed the Association of Plastic Artists, and in the spring of 1933 the experimental theatre of Józef Jarema “Cricot” was opened here. Since the middle of the 20th century, the building has been used for museum purposes — for years it housed the Theater Department of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow. In 2020, the former Scholars' Hospital became the seat of the Centre for the Interpretation of the Intangible Heritage of Krakow.
During the tour we will tell you about the centuries-old history, transformations and the upcoming modernization of the building, as a result of which the House under the Cross will reopen to the inhabitants of Krakow.
Please note that the building is not architecturally accessible. Some passages lead down narrow, steep stairs.
Conducted by: dr Andrzej Iwo Szoka
The tour is an event accompanying the exhibition “Kraków. Sounds, melodies, words.”
