The history of cotton cultivation in Central Asia reveals the paradoxes resulting from the influence of colonial modernity and the accompanying friction and resistance. The narrative of the tour focuses on the ecological aspects of these phenomena. In the area of the catchment area of the Aral Lake, monumental transformations have been made, constituting one of the largest projects of modern “subjugation” of nature. An extensive system of canals was built, thanks to which larger and larger areas of the desert were greened. However, the resources of the rivers were depleted so much that the water fed by them almost dried up. The exhibition traces the history of the subordination of nature to cotton cultivation, from archival photographs from the end of the 19th century to the contemporary work of female artists from the region, who diagnose the ecological costs of the functioning of an unsustainable system, not included in the anthropocentric profit and loss account.
