The protagonist of the film is a director who does not know how to cope with the tasks that reality imposes on him. He wants to say everything, and he has nothing left to say. And when the artist has nothing to say, he can still always tell why he has nothing to say.
“8 and 1/2” begins with a symbolic scene, somehow summarizing the whole film and explaining its theory. Director Guido - the hero (Marcello Mastroianni) is trapped in his own car, and the car is standing in a street traffic jam. He cannot open the door or lift the glass, his position becomes critical - he suffocates at the eyes of those around him, but absolutely indifferent, seeing nothing people from other cars. At the last moment, he pierces the roof of his chariot, escapes, rises above everything, flies into the distance. There is actually no plot. The hero undertook to shoot another film. The producers are waiting, the huge machine of the label has already been set in motion, a giant decoration has been built, the actors have been involved, the deadline for the start of filming has been set, everyone is waiting. Meanwhile, the director does not even have a shadow of an idea yet
