“The Last Temptation of Christ. The Gospel of Doubt” is an author's work with elements of transopera, loosely inspired by the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis, the film by Martin Scorses, the Bible, the apocrypha and the images accumulated around Yeshui of Nazareth. We are interested in a man who begins to recognize the figure of the Savior in himself and at the same time tries to escape from it. Whose voice did the hero of the New Testament hear? God or Satan? And how was he supposed to know which was which? Was Yeshua made God by those who needed a savior? Was his death a victim or a violence that was later given meaning?
About the event
The show speaks Aramaic, Hebrew, Yiddish, but also in Polish, English and French. Languages become a political map of faith, exile, diaspora, borders and the struggle for the right to land. The story of Yeshui of Nazareth meets here with the present of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the image of the Gaza Strip turned into ruin. What happens to religion when the desire for salvation begins to justify the suffering of others?
The world of the spectacle is torn between the promise of salvation and the right to live here and now. How to read the Eight Blessings today, when the reward for suffering can sound like a call to its acceptance? How to look at the Way of the Cross, knowing that its culmination is the public execution of the body? Azazel does not tempt Yeshui with sin. It offers him a way beyond the order of obedience, prophecy and messianic destiny: love, carnal, old age, ordinary earthly happiness.
