“Is what I'm going through normal?” This is a question many people ask themselves after the loss of a loved one. Grief can be accompanied by intense, changing emotions, recurring thoughts and reactions that consume a lot of energy. Sometimes there is also self-doubt, one's own feelings or relationships with others. How to understand what is happening to us? Is there a “right” or “right” way to grieve?

Many people have heard of the “phases” or “stages” of grief. These models have shaped the way we think and talk about coping with loss over the years. Today, however, we know that mourning does not follow a single, predictable pattern. Rather, modern approaches show it as a dynamic and individual process in which different emotions, needs and ways of coping can emerge, subside and return.

We invite you to broaden your perspective and take a close look at this complex experience. We want to create a space for a better understanding of grief and show how we can accompany ourselves and others without judgment and acceleration, but with more tenderness, respect and care.

Anja Franczak

Founder of the Good Death Institute and author of the book “Frog. A little story of mourning.” She trained in Heidelberg at the Institut für Klinische Seelsorgeausbildung (Institut für Klinische Seelsorgeausbildung) and is a professional bereavement companion certified by the Federal Association of Bereavement Association in Germany (Bundesverband Trauerbegleitung e.V.). As a dying doula, she deals with death education and supports families caring for a person in the final stage of life.
