November 4, 2026, 17:00, Zamojski Dom Kultury, club room, 1st floor
Mountains and Friends is the ultimate journey in the highest mountains with the legend and icon of the world's Himalayas. Joint experience of successes, difficult situations, the opportunity to get to know through the story of Krzysztof Wielicki.
Krzysztof Wielicki — climber, mountain climber, mountaineer and himalayist, was born on January 5, 1950 in Szklarka Przygrodzicka, a small town in Wielkopolska.
As the 5th man on earth, he won fourteen eight-thousandths or the crown of the Himalayas and Karakorum. Three of the peaks of the highest mountains he conquered as the first man during the winter ascents.
He began his adventure with mountain hiking in scouting. It was there that the passion and love for the mountains was born, which invariably accompanies him to this day. The time of study is the time of the first climbs in Sokoliki and gaining skills under the guidance of, among others, Wanda Rutkiewicz.
He achieved his first foreign successes in 1973 during a camp in the Dolomites, making the first one-day crossing of the Via Italiano — Francese to Puenta Civetta with Bogdan Nowaczyk. This opened the paths for further expeditions to the mountains of the Caucasus, Hindukus and Parmir.
On February 17, 1980, Krzysztof Wielicki and Leszek Cichy, as members of the national expedition led by Andrzej Zawada, made the first winter ascent to the eight-thousandth mountain — Mount Everest. It was the beginning of Polish winter achievements in the Himalayas.
Winter entrances to Kanchendzonga and Lhotse make Krzysztof Wielicki their first winter conqueror. He is a Himalayan who has written into the history of the solitary ascents of Broad Peak, Daulagiri, Shishapangma, Gasherbrum II, and the solo ascent of Nanga Parbat, from the sub-mountain meadows were followed by Pakistani shepherds, the only witnesses to the feat.
At the beginning of the 2000s, a new stage in the climbing life of Krzysztof Wielicki began, related to the organization and leadership of high-altitude expeditions. Expeditions to K2, Nanga Parbat and Broad Peak were full of excitement, success, withdrawal decisions and rescue operations. In 2018, during the attempt of the first winter ascent to K2, he coordinated a rescue operation, during which members of the expedition, Denis Urubko and Adam Bielecki, rescued the Frenchwoman Elizabeth Revol coming down from Nanga Parba, after her expedition to the summit, during which Tomasz Mackiewicz died.
Krzysztof Wielicki was awarded many prestigious awards for his outstanding achievements. He received, among others, the Knight's Cross of the Renaissance of Poland, for his services to Polish mountaineering and mountaineering, the Princess of Asturias Award in the field of sports, the Złoty Czekan, the Super Colossus for lifetime climbing achievements, and in 2001 he became a member of The Explorers Club.
Krzysztof Wielicki brings his stories to pages, becoming an author and co-author of books. A colorful character, an extraordinary speaker, a conqueror and a man who feels best in the company of friends, in the proximity of another person.
Admission to the event is free.
Travel meetings are held as part of the project “For the horizon of imagination” co-financed by the Municipal Program for the Prevention and Resolution of Alcohol Problems and the Prevention of Drug Addiction for the years 2024-2026.
