In 1936, the people of Palestine rise up against British rule. Yusuf divides his life between Jerusalem and life in the province, dreaming of a future free from the turmoil of war.
As the number of Jewish settlers fleeing the tide of anti-Semitism in Europe grows, Palestinians are uniting in an act of greatest resistance in the 30-year history of British rule. All sides face an inevitable confrontation. Crucial moments are coming for the future of the British Empire and Palestine.
“Palestine 36” is a story about the Arab uprising of the 1930s, British colonialism, Jewish migration to Palestine and the conflict, the consequences of which are felt to this day.
The film has aroused great emotions even today. After the first screening in Jerusalem, police raided the event and the organizers were arrested. The production represented Palestine in the Oscar race, and its official premiere took place during the Toronto Film Festival, where the creators were rewarded with a 20-minute standing ovation.
Behind the camera was Annemarie Jacir, director of the films “Wajib” and “Salt of this Earth”. “Palestine 36" is the only feature film shot in Palestine since the invasion in 2023.
