Mr. Tadeusz

Each of us knows the first lines of the opening invocation of Mr. Thaddeusz. Lithuania is the homeland of Adam Mickiewicz, which the poet lost like health. When mentioning this Lithuania, the first thing that comes to the poet's mind is the beautiful cultivated fields. But is he even interested in the stories of the people who cultivated these fields? Already in the title, Mr. Tadeusz is clearly devoted to the history of the nobility; after all, he tells the story of the last noble inn. The national epic does not seem to notice the other world at all. So who is it written for? What do we — contemporaries — actually have in common with the story of the ever-quarreling nobles; a story that ends with the contract marriage of a fourteen-year-old girl to the eponymous “Lord”? What does this story really teach today? And what is it really about? Should we admire her or hate her?
