Mr. Tom is building a house

The show, addressed to the youngest viewers (as part of the so-called mainstream), was prepared based on the charming work of the master of the 20th century avant-garde, Stefan Themerson entitled Pan Tom Builds a House.

The booklet, first published in 1938, has brought up generations of readers; 80 years later, it still inspires and impresses with its form. There is in Mr. Tom... the grotesque and a pinch of philosophy, the curiosity and surprise of the child, but above all the joy of discovering the secrets of the reality around us.

It is a witty, clever story about the secrets of the creation of a house; from the idea to the roof with a chimney, from the concept of an architect to the work of such professionals and craftsmen as plumber, carpenter, electrician or watchmaker, from trying to buy lights in a store to a story about how to deliver water to the house until finally buying an alarm clock.

From Themerson's text, the director chose only a few plots, and the word here is rather a complement to stage actions or an excuse to play with form or sound, in which children actively participate.

The author of the scenography, consisting of colorful, multifunctional elements, is a recognized graphic artist, creator of illustrations for books for children and young people, poster artist Maciej Szymanowicz. The music, or rather the soundtrack of the performance, performed by live actors, was created by Hubert Pyrgies, composer, beatboxer, vocalist, leader of the Chonabibe band.
