Debate of Bunkier Sztuki Gallery in the context of the Polish Design exhibition. The biography of the object/Biography of the designer will be the development of two narrative paths in particular: 1) the relationship between the designer/designer and the work, 2) the relationship between the utility object and everyday life and personal stories.
We invited Aleksandra Koperda (curator of the exhibition), Marta Niemywska-Grynas and Dawida Grynas (Grynas Studio), Magda Jurek (Mrs. Jurek) and Martyna Golik to talk. The discussion will be moderated by Tadeusz Marek (Radio Kraków).
The panel will reflect on two complementary design narratives — the story of the creator and the history of the object. The invited guests will answer questions about how objects function in the culture, what meanings users give them and how designers can consciously shape the “resumes” of their products. The participants of the panel will consider whether the designer's biography should be the key to understanding the object — or rather, it is the object itself, its matter, functioning and journey through different contexts that build a story that becomes independent of the author over time.
The talk will also touch on the ethics of design, the sustainable circulation of things and the responsibility for how objects “live” in society after they leave the studio. The panel will be an invitation to look at design as a dynamic process — a network of relationships between people, materials, technologies and stories. Through the juxtaposition of the subject and the biography of the designer, the participants will try to capture a fuller picture of what design is today and how we can talk about it.
