“Miss Julia” — translated by Mariusz Kalinowski as “Miss Julie” — is one of August Strindberg's most famous dramas. Written at the end of the 19th century, it was a manifesto of naturalism and, in its spirit, showed man as a complex being influenced by the mental, the spiritual, but in equal measure also the corporeal. Strindberg was interested in a man of blood and blood, succumbing to weaknesses and urges, entangled in complicated relationships with loved ones.

About the event

“Miss Julia” — translated by Mariusz Kalinowski as “Miss Julie” — is one of August Strindberg's most famous dramas. Written at the end of the 19th century, it was a manifesto of naturalism and, in its spirit, showed man as a complex being influenced by the mental, the spiritual, but in equal measure also the corporeal. Strindberg was interested in a man of blood and blood, succumbing to weaknesses and urges, entangled in complicated relationships with loved ones.

The action of the drama “Miss Julie” takes place in a few hours, from dusk to dawn, on a carnivorous night. The summer solstice is the time when nature awakens from winter sleep, is at its peak and takes possession of man. The atmosphere of a hot June night pushes the heroes to cross the boundaries that are set for them by strict social norms. Desires come to the fore, dormant needs take precedence over reason.

Miss Julie, a young countess embroiled in her own fears and anxieties, leads a dangerous erotic game in which she drags servant Jean into. The romance is intended for her to be an attempt to soothe an unnamed longing that she feels more and more painfully.

What does he miss? What does he really want? What will she find when she crosses a border that she was not allowed to violate?

In Strindberg, under the surface of words, there are thoughts that scream louder than words.
