Spain, 1944: After the civil war was over for five years, republican partisans are still fighting against the fascist Franco regime in the mountains of northern Spain. Meanwhile, eleven-year-old Ofelia flees into the fantasy world of her books, which is populated by elves and other creatures. One day, a Pan appears to her in a maze near the country estate, who reveals to her that she is in fact a king's daughter from an underground kingdom.
