Paolo Cherchi Usai in Illusion
In November we will be hosting Paolo Cherchi Usai in Poland. The acclaimed curator and film theorist will visit Warsaw on the occasion of the premiere of the Polish translation of his book “The Death of Cinema” published by FINA.
On November 3, at the Iluzjon cinema, we invite you to an author's meeting. Guests will be Paolo Cherchi Usai, translator of the Polish edition Oskar Wanat and Deputy Director of FINA Elżbieta Wysocka.
After the meeting, Paolo Cherchi Usai will announce a screening of the classic Swedish noir film “The Girl with Hyacinths” (1950, directed by Hasse Ekman).
NOTE, during the author's meeting and the preview of the film, the use of telephones and other devices that record video or sound is prohibited. Protective covers for phones will be handed out at the entrance.
On November 3, at the box office of the Iluzjon cinema, you can pick up free tickets for the author's meeting.
“The Death of Cinema” is one of the most important voices in the field of concern for film heritage. It presents the challenges faced by film archives and film historians in times of widespread commercialization, but also digitalization of cinematography.
FINA is pleased to present this book to readers for the first time in a Polish translation. This is an interesting position for both researchers and all those interested in the history of cinema and the transformations of contemporary media. Usai's book, in an essayistic formula, introduces themes related to restoration and archiving, while confronting them with contemporary changes in cinema.
“You have in your hand a photo essay, but also a mourning treatise. An artistic diagnosis and a method of working through the fact that the loss of moving images and cinema — and with them our memory — is irreversible.”
dr Elżbieta Wysocka (from the preface to the Polish edition)
“This book is an elegy for the thousands of film copies that are crumbling every day like a world long and wide. Paolo [Cherchi Usai] with surgical precision (and a welcome pinch of irony) outlines the pattern of a global crisis that demands our ruthless care.”
Martin Scorsese (from the preface to the first edition)
Room: Mała Czarna
Free admission | Tickets to be picked up at the cinema box office on the day of the event.
ATTENTION! During the author's meeting and the preview of the film, the use of telephones and other devices that record video or sound is prohibited. Protective covers for phones will be handed out at the entrance.
