Adrian Robak — Passion according to St. Mark

Passion according to Saint Mark Adrian Robak will become the focal point of the Lenten concert of the Silesian Philharmonic Choir conducted by Jarosław Wolanin. The contemporary elaboration of an evangelical tale of the Passion of Christ will resonate alongside the Renaissance Lamentations of Jeremiah Thomas Tallis and Ludwig van Beethoven's reflective Night Hymn, creating a program devoted to the themes of suffering, prayer and hope.

In his work Adrian Robak goes back to one of the most important traditions of sacred music, engaging in dialogue with a genre of passion that has held a special place in European culture for centuries. The story of the last days of Christ's life, his passion and death is presented in the language of contemporary choral music, while preserving the depth of the spiritual message and the drama of the Gospel narrative. It is music that prompts us to reflect on the meaning of suffering, sacrifice and redemption.

The Lamentations of Jeremiah Thomas Tallis, which precede the Passion, are among the most outstanding works of English Renaissance music. Created in the 16th century, the composition is based on biblical texts mourning the fall of Jerusalem. For centuries, the laments of the prophet Jeremiah accompanied the liturgy of Holy Week, becoming a symbol of pain, loss and expectation of rebirth. Tallis's masterful polyphony gives these words an extraordinary power of expression, combining spiritual focus with deep expression.

Ludwig van Beethoven's Night Hymn, inspired by the poetry of Friedrich von Matthisson, is a short but extremely moody composition in which the night becomes a space of silence, prayer and contemplation. Beethoven portrays it not as a time of darkness, but as a moment of spiritual solace and encounter with that which transcends the everyday.

The works of Beethoven, Tallis and Robak, created several centuries apart, engage in the same dialogue with the human experience of suffering and hope. They create a musical path that leads from reflection and lamentation to the story of sacrifice and redemption — a path particularly close to the Lenten season of preparation for Easter.
