Patti Smith is one of modern cultural history's most notable and influential figures. She has persistently (now on her way to 80) transcended the boundaries between music, poetry and activism, and throughout her career has been synonymous with rebelliousness and creative freedom.
At 20, Smith arrived in New York in the ashes of hippie culture. She became part of the clientele of the famous and infamous Chelsea Hotel, and with guitarist Lenny Kaye she formed The Patti Smith Group, which was periodically the house orchestra at what was to become the punk club above them all, CBGB. At the end of 1975 came the seminal debut album 'Horses' — one of the most significant releases in rock history, which merged raw proto-punk with the expressive beat poetry Smith had already attracted attention with on New York's vibrant lyric scene in the years before. The record became the beginning of a story, which was to turn out to take many unexpected turns. Get it in detail in 'Patti Smith: Electric Poet'.
