Paweł Ignatowicz — guitarist, composer and music producer living in New York, born on December 20, 1980 in Żywiec. He is considered one of the most remarkable and distinguished guitarists and composers combining jazz and rock of his generation. A guitar virtuoso with a tremendous sense of rhythm, Ignatowicz seamlessly blends intense jazz improvisation and progressive rock with other musical genres.
Surrounded by a variety of musical influences from an early age, Ignatowicz was inspired by his father, a multi-instrumentalist, who introduced him to the folk music of the Żywiec Beskid Highlanders and New Orleans Dixieland jazz. At the age of 8, Ignatowicz began studying at the State School of Music, in the class of clarinet and piano and later saxophone, before discovering his true passion for the guitar at the age of 10. He is a virtuoso of electric, acoustic, nylon, fretless guitar, guitar synthesizer and electric sitar.
Ignatowicz obtained a master's degree in art from the University of Silesia, specializing in jazz guitar under the direction of Prof. Karol Ferfecki. After graduating in 2005, he moved to New York to pursue a career in music. His compositions combine elements of straight-ahead and fusion jazz, with influences from South American and Indian rhythms, numerous musical genres such as drum and bass, rock and minimal music, in which he combines acoustic sounds with electrical elements. Ignatovich believes in crossing the boundaries of genres, focusing on the quality of melody, harmony and sound. His music has a multicultural tone, but at the same time it is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition.
Ignatowicz's musical sensibility is inspired by many diverse influences, from his childhood fascination with Queen, to the virtuosity of Steve Vai, to the profound influence of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Ignatowicz emphasizes the creation of musical spaces without genre boundaries, saying: “The only sensible division of music is its division into good and bad.”.
Paweł Ignatowicz has collaborated with many prominent musicians, including John Benitez, Richie Cannata, Ari Hoenig, Glenn Zaleski, Edward Perez, Ferenc Nemeth, Colin Stranahan, Julian Shore, Rick Rosato, Benito Gonzalez, Luques Curtis, Dana Hawkins, Adam Bałdych, Piotr Wyleżol and Ofri Nehemya. He released his debut album “Talk To You Later” in 2008 and composed the music for the film “Double Breath” directed by Rafał Janus in 2011. His latest album “Here and Now” (2017) presents a diverse mix of acoustic and electric sounds, featuring musicians such as Ferenc Nemeth, Julian Shore, Edward Perez and Jonathan Singer.
Ignatowicz has performed in many legendary jazz clubs and concert halls, such as Dizzy's Club, The Django, 55 Bar in New York and Blues Alley in Washington. In 2023, the authorities of Żywiec honored him with the title of “Ambassador of the City of Żywiec” for his achievements and artistic activity. He was also invited by the Polish ambassador to Washington to perform on the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism in Poland.
