One of the most important films of the 21st century returns in a new installment after a thorough 4K reconstruction.
Based on the memoirs of Władysław Szpilman, “The Pianist” is a personal account of survival in a war-torn city, a moving testimony of the power that art gives in the least expected moments and a delightful authentic portrait of the artist portrayed by Oscar winner Adrien Brody.
In 1939 Szpilman is an acclaimed pianist and composer who lives with his family in Warsaw. When the Nazis enter the capital, the life of a Jewish musician turns into a nightmare: he loses more rights, ends up in the ghetto, observes two uprisings and tries to survive in the destroyed city. He is helped by chance, a stroke of luck and a love of music.
“The Pianist” is a film about a witness of the Holocaust made with respect and maturity by another witness. One of Roman Polanski's most important films was the director's first and so far only return to wartime, which he experienced as a little boy. Filmed on the streets of Warsaw with a partly Polish crew and cast, the film is a profound humanistic manifesto in which despair meets smoldering hope.
Told in a chronological, sparing and detail-oriented manner, “The Pianist” is an event in the history of Polish and world cinema: a vision of a painful past created by the master, in which personal perspective is combined with the momentum and faithful reconstruction of events.
Awarded the Golden Palm and 3 Oscars, the masterpiece is back in cinemas after a new post-production and reconstruction of the image in 4K quality.
