Old Polish custom says: if you want to receive a guest well, you have to get drunk with him. However, this tradition can provide as much fun as it does trouble - especially if there is one abstainer among the drinkers, in addition to a candidate for the hand of a responsible host, who faces a dilemma: to pass off a girl as a non-drinker, or for her good companion “by the glass”? In Franciszek Bohomolec's eighteenth-century comedy directed by Artur W. Baron, Old Polish texts are intertwined with Jerzy Pilch's prose, as well as with well-known contemporary songs, among others by the choir Dan or Kazik. This timeless art is equally entertaining and thought-provoking.
About the event
Performance Drunk in a Mirror for a Pole
“In the Drunks, we put a mirror in which everyone can look through themselves and think about their own experiences, draw conclusions, and also see how little we differ from our Sarmatian ancestors.”
Arthur W. Baron
“Laughing at other people's vices, he gets to know his own man, marveling at the vividly repainted virtue he acquires a desire for it. In short: often a single comedy enlightens a person sooner than great volumes of moral science.
F. Bohomolec
Description of the performance: Polish hospitality can be as noble as it is uncomfortable. Especially if the party drizzled with booze drags on for a few days, as with Mr. Piyakiewicz, who wants to marry his niece Teresa. There are two candidates for the girl's hand: a good glass companion Iwroński and a reasonable abstainer Sobrecka. Invited neighbors and guests party at their best, and Teresa and Sobrecki are looking for a way to convince their uncle to agree to their wedding. Based on the eighteenth-century satire of Franciszek Bohomolec, the art, with elements taken from Jerzy Pilch's prose and songs by the Dan and Kazik choir, is a contemporary interpretation of Old Polish customs, which, despite the passing of the years, do not go to waste at all. The timeless costumes for the show were designed by Dorota Roqueplo.
