In 2015, Tomasz Owsiany set off for the Philippines on his first solo reporting trip. He spent nine months in the archipelago, living among indigenous and non-indigenous communities and peering into places that the tourist usually does not go to. Instead of just observing, he immersed himself in their everyday life: he mined coal, collected, plowed plots and participated in ceremonies that no one had arranged for him before. He got to know the Philippines up close, sometimes fascinating, sometimes brutal, often surprising. He peeked behind the walls of the penal colony, befriended a healer who secretly practiced black magic, got to the camp of a paramilitary group in Mindanao, and even became a guest of a Filipino multimillionaire. Ten years after that expedition, in 2025, the traveler returns to the archipelago. He finds former interlocutors, visits familiar places and examines what has changed over the decade — and what, despite the passage of time, has remained the same. This time he looks at Fili.
