In 1827, Franz Schubert composed a cycle of songs Winter Journey (German: Winterreise) to the poetry of Wilhelm Müller. In 1994 Stanisław Barańczak published a volume of poems Winter Journey to the Music of Franz Schubert. These poems do not constitute a direct translation of the original texts, but are a transfer of the eponymous and metaphorical Journey to the realities of the present. Poems from this collection will be used in the performance.
The performance performed by our artists will be for the Spectators an emotionally engaging poetic journey, as it were, a stop in time, prompting reflection on the transience and the human condition in the 21st century; a show that brings the audience closer to the genre of romantic song and is an expression of the partnership of the stage singer with the pianist — a presentation of the strict and intimate fusion of music with the word, which is the foundation of both the work of Franz Schubert and the poems of Stanisław Barańczak.
Performers will be: bass-baritone Janusz Żak and pianist Rozalia Kierc.
The loneliness of the main character — the Traveler — is shown in a world of social isolation, heartless corporatism and emotional coldness. It is accompanied only by music in the form of a piano and a pianist — Białość — taking part in the stage action, like the specter of the Voyager's relationship with the other man, his inner world and memories.
The performance will be an excellent opportunity for music lovers to get acquainted with the masterpiece of romantic vocal lyrics, and for us an ideal moment to present Polish poetic work in an innovative form of musical performance using multimedia techniques.
