Before writing his iconic 9th Symphony, Ludwig van Beethoven created another colossal work for soloists, choir and orchestra, which was even more seminal.

Beethoven's Missa Solemnis gives us a glimpse of divine love. The fair took four years to complete and combines the personal and the spiritual in a way that only Beethoven could create. It leads the listener through dramatic musical landscapes -- from quiet passages to thunderous climaxes -- while Beethoven takes advantage of every musical opportunity to translate his vision of God's greatness into music.

The Missa Solemnis is notorious for its severity and places demands on musicians and singers of the highest level. The outstanding Czech conductor and DR Symphony Orchestra's audience favourite Petr Popelka leads four outstanding soloists and the DR Concert Choir in this performance. Together they bring to life a score that is known for its intensity, complexity and brilliance, and which today does the same thing as in 1824: reminds us to seek peace in a time of war.

Extras on Fridays
After the concert you can linger in the foyer for a half-hour 'Extranummer', where you can get closer to the musicians of the DR Symphony Orchestra and experience them playing together in more intimate settings. For the 'Extranummer', the bar is open, the lights are dimmed and the musicians themselves have composed the programme and talk about the music. The 'Extranummer' takes place in the lobby of DR Koncerthuset and is included in the concert ticket.
