Poppy Ackroyd

Composer and pianist Poppy Ackroyd returns with Liminal, her intimate new album, which will be released on June 12th via One Little Independent Records. Written and recorded in a time of profound upheaval and change, the work marks a return to the core of Ackroyd's musical work and once again combines piano and violin.

For the first time since Feathers from 2019, Ackroyd is once again combining these two instruments exclusively together. All sounds on the album come from piano and violin alone. Melody, harmony, rhythm and texture arise directly from the physical possibilities of the instruments themselves — from struck and plucked strings to percussion elements. It is precisely this deliberate restriction that remains central to their creative process.

As with her previous releases, Ackroyd wrote, played, recorded, mixed and produced the album herself. The mastering was done by Matouš Godík, layout and design by Ruth Keating. Ackroyd has always been heavily involved in the visual design of her releases; at Liminal, she is contributing the cover photo herself for the first time.
