“The Mermaid of Picasso” is a comedy-drama telling the story of a drawing by Picasso drawn in an apartment in Warsaw's Wola. This is a film about the great need for close and sincere relationships between people who can be together regardless of age difference, different experiences and needs. It is also a story about the influence of art on our lives.
FILM INSPIRED BY A TRUE STORY
The story of Picasso's Mermaid is one of the most fascinating and at the same time least known episodes from the history of post-war Warsaw. In September 1948 Pablo Picasso came to Poland for the World Congress of Intellectuals in Defense of Peace in Wrocław. As a politically involved artist, he willingly participated in similar initiatives. Taking advantage of the visit, he also visited Warsaw, where he visited the rebuilding workers' settlements in Wola — one of the symbols of the capital reviving after the war. During a visit to one of the apartments, Picasso spontaneously drew a Warsaw Mermaid on the wall. The seemingly ordinary gesture of the world-famous artist quickly grew to the rank of a sensation. The apartment became the object of constant visits, and its tenants found themselves in an extremely difficult situation. The authorities of the People's Republic of Poland obliged them to share the apartment with visitors, so hundreds and even thousands of people passed through their house interested in seeing the famous
drawing. The daily life of the family was completely subordinated to the interest that Picasso's work aroused. In 1953, at the request of residents exhausted by the situation, a decision was made to paint the drawing. It is this unusual trace of history that becomes the starting point for the cinematic story, which after years changes the lives of the protagonists again.
