pl. Wojciecha Kilara 1, Katowice

Not styles or eras, but ways of thinking about organs organize the program of Jan Liebermann's Katowice recital. The instrument, around which so many stereotypes have grown over the centuries, reveals here diametrically different faces. With equal freedom, he conducts both Johann Sebastian Bach's monumental Passacaglia in C minor BWV 582, each variation of which seems to be a rhetorical phrase with an even deeper meaning, and the graceful Aria from the Orchestral Suite in D major BWV 1068, an even fragile tale. In Alfred Hollins' spectacular concert overture in C minor, the organ becomes an instrument of dazzling virtuosity, while in Sigfrid Karg-Elert's Seven Pastels from Lake Constance Op. 96 paintings by Sigfrid Karg-Elert — a palette of subtle sound impressions. Finally, the elaboration of Bach's Trio Sonata in C major BWV 529 proves how successful it is to practice solo chamber music at the counter, and the transcription of the overture to Richard Wagner's Tannhäuser — that the organ cabinet accommodates an entire symphony orchestra.
