The French idiom “feel cold in the air” is replaced by Chris Marker in the original title of the film with “red”. His film is not about the weather, but about history. About the moment when the revolution ceases to be a local event and becomes the global language of the political imagination.
The Air Smells Red is a monumental editing essay built from archives, television footage, and abandoned documentary filmmakers' recordings. Marker guides the viewer through a decade of rebellions: from Vietnam and Paris in May 1968, through Prague and Chile, to Palestine and the scattered points of the global revolution that are beginning to collapse.
The film is not about victory, but about the leftovers — what remains of political hope when history fails to deliver on its promises. Marker does not reconstruct events, but mounts their echo, creating one of the most important attempts to capture the 20th century as a structure of discontinuous, recurring waves of rebellion.
