Beyond the horizon

Sounds a little strange, but not for astronomers. When we look at the stars at night, we do not see the universe, but we actually observe the passage of time. We are picking up echoes of the past, not the real picture of the Cosmos. Can we see more? Are we able to look beyond the horizon that the dome of the sky sets for us? How far, or rather how long, are we able to see objects in the Universe to understand concepts such as time and space?
