Out of the Box: EDWARD HOPPER: AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY

“Edward Hopper. American love story” Hopper. An American Love Story by Phil Grabsky UK 2022

The works of Edward Hopper are perhaps the most recognizable and influential art in the United States. One of his most popular oil paintings is The Night Marks of 1942, also known by its original title: Night Hawks - and this is because the figure of a man sitting at a bar has a nose that resembles the beak of these birds. Hopper drew on the great Degas, and from him Mark Rothko, Banksy, Alfred Hitchcock (House on the Hill in Psycho) or David Lynch, and even the creators of The Simpsons — all of whom were inspired by Hopper's unique way of capturing American life. Who was this young New York illustrator fighting for fame? What influence on his later work was his wife Josephine Nivison, who gave up a promising artistic career to become his manager?
