Giving a good talk before a movie is quite a challenge. The screenings of films in the Discussion Film Club “Giant” are usually preceded by an introductory word prepared by our guests or TCK staff, this time we invite you to give a lecture before the selected film and participate in the Tarnogórski Speaker Competition. As part of the event, films of high artistic merit will be presented, and the competition itself is aimed at disseminating the art of speech as a method of popularizing knowledge about film.
The contestants will give lectures before the Icelandic drama “The Love That Stays”, the critically acclaimed thriller “The Secret Agent” and Emelie Blichfeldt's film “The Ugly Sister”.
About the film:
“Ugly Sister” is the story of Elvira, who lives in the shadow of her fabulously beautiful half-sister. In a world where beauty is the currency and the royal ball resembles ruthless games, Elwira decides to marry a prince at all costs. The biggest obstacle to conquer the heart of a dream man and start a new better life is Cinderella.
“Ugly Sister” is a genre cinema of the highest quality that fits perfectly with the popular poetry of recent times, thanks to Titane or Substance, but also draws inspiration from the cinema of David Cronenberg. Director Emilie Blichfeldt, using the formula of costume cinema, talks about very current problems — the dictates of beauty, unhealthy patterns or how the body changes.
The film, which turned out to be a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlinale, was partly shot in Poland, and in supporting roles we can admire Katarzyna Herman and Agnieszka Żulewska.
2025 | Norway, Poland, Denmark | dir. E. Blichfeldt | 105 min | horror, comedy | 15+ | SUBTITLES
