Crete is the largest, fifth largest island of Greece located in the Mediterranean Sea. The history of Crete dates back to about 6,000 BC. The Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, the Turks and the Egyptians were here. The largest city and administrative capital of the island is Heraklion. The city in its modern form was founded in 824 CE by the Saracens. Crete covers an area of 8,621 sq km. It is inhabited by about 617 thousand people. The island has a subtropical climate. The most important mountain ranges are the White Mountains in the western part, the Idalskie Mountains in the middle, both ranges above 4,400 m above sea level, and Thriptis in the east - 1,400 m above sea level. The tour starts from the small town of Elounda located on the coast of the island. It is a tourist attraction, a classic seaside resort. Greek minister Papandreou usually spends the summer in Elounda and it is visited by the royal family of Saudi Arabia. The town has wonderful sandy beaches, beautiful views of Mirabello Bay.
