About the event

Znak Publishing House and Zachęta National Gallery of Art invite you to a meeting with Sonia Kiza about her latest book “Art and Outrage”.

Why does the naked breast in the picture delight, and outside the museum arouse outrage? When did breasts become a symbol of sexuality and why does showing them still cause so much emotion? Sonia Kisha looks at how art has shaped our ideas about the female body, sexuality and shame over the centuries. It shows that what we consider natural today is often the result of cultural norms and beliefs. And works of art depicting naked breasts are not only aesthetic objects, but also carriers of ideology, which for centuries influenced the way of perceiving the female body. The author will talk about art, women, society and patriarchy.

Sonia Kiza — art historian, columnist for “Zadła”, educator and popularizer of knowledge about art, author of the bestselling Hysteria Sztuki. Since 2019, she has been running the @histeria .arte profile, where she talks about the history of art, women and the social and cultural contexts of the works in an accessible and uncompromising way.

The conversation will be moderated by Eliza Trojanowska.
